Q&A About Herbs

1. WHAT ARE HERBS? Herbs are plants. They are the highest quality food known to man. They contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes and trace elements in natural balance and harmony.

2. WHY USE HERBS? It is our sincere belief that our Creator put herbs on the earth to maintain and restore our health. We believe that herbs get to the cause of health problems, not just the symptoms. Herbs are whole-end balanced; thus, they provide nutrition for our body to become whole and balanced.

3. ARE THERE BAD SIDE EFFECTS WITH USING HERBS? No, but some people experience cleansing actions in the body when first using herbs (such as nausea, diarrhea, headaches, etc.). It is this detoxifying process that helps bring the body into a state of health. When toxins (poisons) that have been stored in the body are released, temporary (2-5 days) discomfort may be experienced. Be glad when you have these feelings because it means you are ridding your body of harmful toxins.

4. DO I TREAT HERBS LIKE DRUGS? (small dosages, caution in mixing, watching for overdose) Herbs are food, not drugs. Most herbs can be taken in large quantities without harmful side effects. Mixing herbs (which are foods) has no more side effects than mixing carrots with peas. You can take all the herbs you want to benefit your health. Most chemical drugs can be taken at the same time as herbs, but it is preferable to take them at different times. (Consult your physician about any chemical drug use). There are a few herbs that pregnant and nursing women should be cautious of. There are many good books about herb use during pregnancy and nursing.

5. HOW MANY HERBS SHOULD I TAKE AND FOR HOW LONG? When using a new herb, begin with the recommended dosage and observe how your body reacts to it. If you do not receive the desired results, increase or decrease the dosage accordingly. When herbs are used for restoring health, dosages will need to be five to seven times that which is required for maintaining health. Depending, of course, on the condition and the severity of it, approximately three months of sustained high dosage is usually required before the body begins to heal itself. Then add one month for each year you had the illness. (Dr. Jack Ritchason, The Little Herb Encyclopedia)

6. HOW SOON SHOULD I GET RESULTS? It's impossible to give an exact answer. There are many variables involved, such as the severity of the problem, the health of a person's assimilation and digestive system, the number of herbs taken, the stress a person is under, their diet, and so on. However, someone with problems like constipation or blood sugar imbalance will often get excellent results within a day, while someone with poor eyesight or joint pain may not feel any difference for weeks or more.

7. CAN I QUIT TAKING MY CHEMICAL DRUGS? Herbs are a slow, safe way to build and maintain health. Don't ever quit taking drugs you're dependent on. Many people have gradually decreased drug dosages and frequency with the use of herbs. Always consult with your physician who prescribed the drug.

8. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE HERBS? Since herbs are food, you can take them whenever you want. However, the best time is during your meal; chew each bite thoroughly and as you are ready to swallow, slip a capsule or two of herbs in your mouth and swallow them with your food. (All the digestive fluids and enzymes are present at this time). Do this in the beginning and middle of your meal, leaving something to eat after you have taken them to be sure they are pushed into the stomach cavity in case there is a hiatal hernia problem.
